Kashmir’s Climate Curveball: Srinagar Nears 30°C Amid Missing Western Disturbances

Srinagar : Srinagar has been experiencing warmer days with temperatures soaring to a maximum of around 29.7 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 13.6 degrees Celsius on Friday even as the Meteorological Department officials predict an upward trend in mercury in the coming days. “The temperatures will rise further in the coming days in Kashmir,” senior meteorologist Sonam Lotus told. “There is an absence of active Western Disturbance and a stable atmosphere prevailing in J&K.”

The senior meteorologist said that there was a likely chance of slight respite from the rising temperature on May 19. “At the same time, there are no chances of any significant weather activity in J&K that might bring down temperatures,” he said.

Another MeT official said that they have seen a rise in temperatures recently, which is typical for this time of the year. “The maximum temperature reached 28.9 degrees Celsius, while the minimum settled at 13.6 degrees Celsius on Thursday,” he said.

The MeT has predicted generally dry weather but with a caveat. “We are expecting generally dry conditions with possible thunderstorms in isolated areas on May 16 and 17,” the officials said.

Looking ahead, the forecast indicates some variability. “Cloudy skies, light rain, and thunder are expected at scattered locations in the late afternoons of May 18 and 19,” the Meteorological Department said. “These conditions are typical for this season as we transition from spring to summer.”

Jammu city on Thursday recorded a maximum temperature of 40.2 degrees Celsius, the season’s highest. The mercury continued its upward trend across the Jammu region, triggering heat wave conditions.

According to the officials, the day temperature in Jammu city was nearly two degrees above the season’s average and 0.9 degrees higher than Wednesday’s temperature of 39.3 degrees Celsius.

The city also recorded a minimum temperature of 24.6 degrees Celsius, which was 0.5 degrees above normal. Night temperatures rise across J&K

Night temperatures recorded an increase at most places across Jammu and Kashmir amid a forecast of generally dry weather. “Srinagar recorded a low of 13 degrees Celsius, slightly down from 13.6 degrees Celsius the previous night, but still 1.6 degrees Celsius above normal for this time of year,” the officials said. In other parts of Kashmir, similar trends were observed.

Qazigund noted a minimum temperature of 11 degrees Celsius, up from 10.6 degrees Celsius the previous night, and 0.8 degrees Celsius above the normal.

Pahalgam registered a low of 7.5 degrees Celsius compared to 7 degrees Celsius the previous night, an increase of 1.6 degrees Celsius above the normal for the popular resort in south Kashmir.

Kokernag also saw a rise, recording 10.7 degrees Celsius against the previous night’s 10.1 degrees Celsius, which is 0.7 degrees Celsius above normal.

Conversely, Kupwara town experienced a slight dip with a minimum of 9.8 degrees Celsius against 10.1 degrees Celsius the previous night, making it 0.3 degrees Celsius below normal.

Gulmarg recorded a minimum temperature of 8.1 degrees Celsius, down from 8.5 degrees Celsius the previous night but still 1.3 degrees Celsius above normal.

In Jammu, the winter capital of J&K, the temperature slightly decreased to 24.3 degrees Celsius from 24.6 degrees Celsius the previous night, remaining 0.2 degrees Celsius above normal.
